White label platform or custom system: which suits a travel company

Short answer: a white label (ready-made) platform is for starting quickly on a small budget, but its rules, its content and often your customer data depend on the platform. A custom system fits your processes completely, but building one from scratch costs tens of thousands of dollars on the world market and takes several months. For most agencies and tour operators the best value is a third option: a system built on ready, proven modules and adapted to your own contracts and processes. This article compares the three models on price, speed, control and risk.

What is a white label platform

A white label platform is a booking system built by another company that runs under your logo, colours and domain. Customers see your brand on the site, while behind it runs the platform’s software and, often, its supplier contracts.

It comes in two forms:

  • Subscription (SaaS): the system runs on the platform’s servers; you pay a setup fee and a monthly subscription. The platform handles updates.
  • Licence (script): you buy the source code once and install it on your own server. Hosting, updates and supplier contracts are usually separate.

Advantages

  • it goes live in a few weeks;
  • the upfront cost is low;
  • some platforms supply flight and hotel content through their own contracts, so at the start you may not need IATA accreditation or a GDS contract.

Disadvantages

  • Your margin depends on the platform’s terms: if content comes through their contracts, they also set the net rates and commission.
  • New features arrive on the platform’s roadmap, not at your request. When you need a different pricing rule or a special report, you often have to wait.
  • Hidden costs: per-booking or per-search fees, and separate charges for extra users, extra suppliers or removing the vendor’s branding.
  • B2B features (sub-agents, balance, credit limit) are usually only in the most expensive plan.
  • Leaving is hard: the customer base, booking history and sometimes the domain stay with the platform.

What is a custom system

A custom system is a booking platform built for a specific company’s sales model, contracts and processes. It connects to GDS, NDC and hotel suppliers under your own contracts, and its pricing rules, B2B structure and reports are built around your needs.

Advantages

  • your own contracts, and therefore your own net rates and margin;
  • any pricing rule, agent structure and report you need;
  • integration with accounting, CRM and other internal systems;
  • data and domain fully under your control.

Disadvantages

  • Building from scratch is expensive: development shops estimate $10,000–20,000 for a basic version (MVP) and $25,000–100,000 or more for a full system.
  • It takes time: a project with a website, one GDS, one hotel supplier and online payments is estimated at 4–6 months.
  • Support is an ongoing cost: annual maintenance is usually put at 10–20% of the build cost.
  • Dependence on the team: if the team that built the system leaves, it can be hard for someone else to take over the code.

The third option: customisation on a ready core

In this model the system is not written from scratch. The core modules — GDS integrations, search and booking, online payment, B2B portal and accounting — already exist and have been proven in other projects. For each company they are customised:

  • your own GDS, consolidator and hotel contracts are connected;
  • markup, commission and service-fee rules are set up for your model;
  • design, languages, currencies and reports are adapted to your needs;
  • a new feature you need is added without waiting for a platform roadmap.

The result is the control of a custom system at a cost close to white label. TT Coders works this way: a project costs 500–3,000 AZN (one-time), and server and technical support cost 50–200 AZN a month. What makes up the price: how much a flight booking system costs.

What it costs worldwide

Figures published openly or cited in industry sources (October 2026; AZN at 1 USD = 1.70 AZN):

Model Price
White label, subscription
Indian SaaS platforms
~$1,000 setup + ~$80 a month; ~$2,000 (~3,400 AZN) in year one
White label, subscription
UK platforms
£500–1,000 a month
Tour sales platforms
Subscription + per-booking fee
$49–569 a month + 1–3% of sales
Licence (script with source code) $2,499 (B2C, one language) – $9,999 (with B2B); hosting and suppliers extra
Custom build from scratch
Development shops’ estimates
MVP $10,000–20,000; full system $25,000–100,000+ (~42,500–170,000 AZN)

When comparing figures, check what each offer includes. For example, some white label platforms supply content through their own contracts and earn from the net rate, while with a licensed script, hosting, updates and supplier contracts are on you. For websites: how much a travel website costs.

Which model suits you

Choose white label if

  • you are just starting and want to test whether online sales work;
  • you have no IATA accreditation, GDS or hotel contract;
  • standard B2C sales are enough and your budget is very limited.

Choose a custom system from scratch if

  • your business model does not fit any system on the market;
  • you have many integrations, hundreds of agents and high sales volume;
  • you have a large budget and a team to develop the system long term.

Choose a ready core with customisation if

  • you have, or will soon have, your own GDS, consolidator or hotel contracts;
  • you want to manage your own pricing rules, B2B agents and reports;
  • you need the control of a custom system without its budget and waiting time.

If you choose white label, check the contract

  1. Whose name is the domain in? The domain should always be registered in your name.
  2. Can you export your data? The customer base, bookings and reports should be downloadable at any time.
  3. Are there per-booking or per-search fees? Next to a low subscription, these fees grow as sales grow.
  4. Can you connect your own contract? When you later get your own GDS or hotel contract, will the platform accept it?
  5. Which plan includes B2B? Are sub-agents, balance and credit limit included in the price?
  6. Exit terms: minimum term, notice period and handover of data when you leave.

Moving from white label to your own system

Many agencies start with white label and move to their own system as sales grow. Plan for it from the start so you lose nothing along the way:

  • register the domain in your own name from day one;
  • export customer and booking data regularly;
  • keep the addresses of pages that rank on Google (destinations, tours, blog), or set up 301 redirects from old addresses to new ones — otherwise you lose your search positions;
  • switch in the low season and run both systems in parallel for a while.

Frequently asked questions

What does white label mean?

White label means selling a product made by another company under your own brand. In travel, it is a booking website or B2B portal that runs under your logo and domain, but on another company’s software and often its supplier contracts.

Can I use my own GDS contract on a white label platform?

It depends on the platform. Some let you connect your own contract; others only sell their own content. Ask in writing before you sign.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I change platforms?

Yes, if page addresses change and no redirects are set up. If the domain is yours and old addresses are 301-redirected to the new ones, most rankings are kept.
